Mrs. Joeretha Hayes celebrates 85 years Young


Mrs. Joretha Hayes celebrates her 85th Birthday with her Soror NAACP President Cynthia Slater.

On Monday March 29, family and friends came together to surprise Mrs. Joeretha Hayes with a celebration for her 85th Birthday as the parade of cars drove by her home while beeping their horns in celebration.


Joeretha Hayes is the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Raiford Stringeld of Jacksonville, Florida. She has one sister Joyce Walker.


Joeretha Hayes married her college sweetheart, the late Edward “Creamy” Hayes, Jr. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage and had two children, the late Edward Hayes, III and LaVeta Hayes. One daughter-in-law, Ramona Hayes. Grandchildren Edward IV and LaNia Charity, great-grandchildren Emani, Rihanna, Edward V Hayes. Edward III and LaVeta both are graduates of Bethune-Cookman College. Bethune-Cookman College awarded the Total Family Medallion for all family members graduating from Bethune-Cookman College.



Joeretha’ s first teaching job was at Campbell Street Elementary under the late John Dickerson. She taught fourth grade for five years. Later she transferred to teaching Physical education and she taught part-time at Campbell and part-time at Rigby Elementary under the late Mr. Strachan and the late Mrs. Jones before school integration. Joeretha was transferred to Highlands elementary. She later retired from Palm Terrace after 36 years of dedicated service.



Memberships with community organizations includes Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Daytona Beach Alumnae Chapter, VEA, NEA, VTO/VEA-Retired, Volusia County alumnae chapter BCU, Kappa Alpha Psi Silhouettes and Daytona Beach NAACP.
