Daytona Beach, Florida Mayor Derrick Henry Speaks.

Updated: Jan 20, 2021

New Daytona Beach Police Chief, Jakari Young addresses the community on the rash of gun violence in Daytona.

I had the honor of swearing in Jakari Young, our city’s new Police Chief, in a ceremony at City Hall earlier this month. Chief Young is this city’s 17th police chief since 1919 and is the best of the best. He is an impeccable man who is as dedicated to his family as he is to our community. From the beach-side to the mainland to the west side of the city limits, Chief Young knows our community, has a stellar track record and has proven during his 19-year career with us that he is well qualified to lead our police department.

In selecting Chief Young to be our next Police Chief, we have proven once again that we are a city of excellence and a city where the American dream can be fulfilled. I am grateful that the American dream is possible in our city. To me, the American dream is when opportunity meets hard work, integrity, honor and discipline, and when those two things meet in fairness and justice emerges – that is the personification of the American dream. Chief Young epitomizes someone who has worked hard and will now realize his dream to lead our police department.

I firmly believe that we have the best police agency in America.

I hold the work our law enforcement officers perform on a daily basis in the highest of esteem. It takes courage to be a great and effective law enforcement officer. Their efforts are humbling and leave me appreciative of their daily commitment and dedication to making Daytona Beach a great and safe place to live, work and play. Our City Commission is committed to supporting Chief Young and our police department, and ensuring they have the resources they need to do their jobs effectively every day. As a community I encourage you to join me in committing to support Chief Young in his new role and working together with our police department to continue making Daytona Beach a safe, welcoming and friendly place to live.
